STATEMENT:
I have decided to join HAPS for its vital support of the A&P community through advocacy, publications, and professional development. My first Annual Conference in Columbus left a lasting impression on me. The camaraderie of the membership, and accessibility to field leaders and authors in the field inspired me to serve. Shortly after, I organized the 2020 Eastern Region Conference in Pittsburgh, successfully hosting the meeting just one week before the national shift to remote instruction. In the challenging months that followed, HAPS have lived up to my first impressions. The organization’s town halls and shared resources and our colleagues’ insights helped us all navigate the pandemic’s uncertainties. This support solidified my commitment to HAPS. I subsequently joined committee such as DEI, Communications, and ADS, helped launch the HAPS Book Club, and began organizing the annual conference that I co-hosted in Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh in 2025.

I am honored to be nominated for President-elect and I truly appreciate the confidence in me. I bring leadership experience from departmental steering and advisory, undergraduate research, annual retreat committees, as well as campus-wide service on the IRB, IACUC, and Faculty Senate. Beyond academia, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and was their treasurer for a few years.

The vitality of HAPS depends on the collective energy of its members. If elected, I will prioritize initiatives that ensure diverse voices are empowered and supported. Further, my deep involvement in education research on campus further informs my commitment to evidence-based instruction and pedagogy. I am hoping that I will continue HAPS initiatives in that area. Looking ahead, I am committed to advancing digital education through the strategic integration of Artificial Intelligence. I envision HAPS leading the effort to curate AI-powered tools such as adaptive quizzing and virtual lab simulations that enhance accessibility while maintaining academic integrity. By establishing best practices for AI effectiveness and equitability, we will likely reduce administrative burdens without compromising the rigor of instruction and assessment. I look forward to the opportunity to serve HAPS and our discipline in this new capacity.

STATEMENT:

I am honored and excited to be considered for the President-elect position for HAPS. My first HAPS was in Columbus, Ohio in 2018, at 9 months pregnant (Aurora arrived 2 weeks later) and knew I had found my professional home. The kindness and compassion of this community of forward-thinking educators was refreshing and I was hooked.

HAPS has been a large part of my life throughout some rather large career shifts moving from community college to medical school teaching. My relationship with HAPS deepened throughout these transitions, in large part because of my active engagement within the organization. By connecting with members at conferences and town halls, I was able to translate what I learned into meaningful applications for my medical students.

My diverse teaching experience across institutions helps me appreciate the challenges educators face. I have served as an adjunct, full-time faculty member, and department chair in the community college setting, worked at a private four-year institution, and now teach in medical education. These roles have given me perspective, strengthened my empathy, and encouraged creative, solutions-oriented thinking.

I participated in the HAPS Leadership academy, which led to my pursuing additional leadership at my institution, through HAPS, and with other organizations. I am an optimistic and positive leader, often trying to find light in the darkness. I approach challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset and develop practical alternatives. I am efficient, honest, and detail-oriented—qualities that would serve me well as President-elect. I am an effective communicator who is comfortable saying, “I don’t know—I’ll find out,” and asking questions when clarity is needed. My leadership development has been incredibly meaningful and I’d like to find a way to share this experience with HAPS.

I’ve often heard HAPSters say that we get the leaders we need for the times we’re in. I have seen this as we’ve navigated COVID and the continuous changes to academia. The coming years will benefit from someone who is passionate about HAPS and has grit, empathy, and determination, someone who can identify opportunities in challenging situations and that reminds us to find joy in our work and to have hope for a brighter future. After six years of serving on the steering committee, I would welcome the opportunity to contribute more deeply at the board level as President-elect. One of my hopes is that I can give back to HAPS with the capacity that the organization has given to me professionally and personally. Our HAPS people are the best!

STATEMENT:

I am honored to be nominated as Treasurer and for the opportunity to give back to the society and community that has been so impactful on me, both professionally and personally. Since 2020, I have attended several conferences and been involved in a variety of committees within HAPS. Through these, I have learned new techniques and approaches to anatomy education, gained mentors and colleagues, and grown with professional development, all while having fun and making some great friends along the way. I can confidently say that a significant amount of my growth as an anatomy educator is attributed to the wonderful people and opportunities within HAPS.

From my first days within HAPS, I have sought out opportunities to be involved and contribute to the wonderful community here. Outside of my involvement in HAPS committees, presented posters and workshops at conferences, and published manuscripts, I also aim to provide the opportunity, space, and means to all members. As Chair of the Coaching subcommittee in the Anatomical Donor Stewardship (ADS) Committee, I have worked to provide member support through the ADS Support Team to provide individual coaching opportunities for those in human anatomy labs and have introduced a new HAPS supported continuing education course at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Through these two avenues and additional HAPS member support, we were able to establish a new Travel Award, the HAPS ADS Coaching Travel Award, to provide funds for those seeking out opportunities outside of their home institution and annual conferences.

As Treasurer, my goal is to continue to not only make sure that HAPS meets the financial demands of current offerings and to fulfill its mission, but to also explore additional opportunities for HAPS members. My experiences both within and outside of HAPS, such as the arranging dissection workshops and the travel award, hosting a regional conference, and managing grant funding, have all provided me with invaluable experience in managing budgets. This is not just through a pure numbers game, but these experiences have required me to be creative to meet outcomes. As your Treasurer, it would be the greatest honor to give back to the society that has been so impactful for me.

Donald Parker

Has been a HAPS member for 6 years

Has attended 2 HAPS conferences in the last 3 years

HAPS SERVICE:

  • 2024 – 2026 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
  • 2025 – 2026 eLearning Subcommittee

STATEMENT:

I am honored to be a candidate for Treasurer of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). Throughout my career as a physician, professor, administrator, and department leader, I have consistently combined fiscal responsibility with mission-driven leadership. I believe strong financial stewardship is foundational to advancing HAPS’ commitment to excellence in anatomy and physiology education.

As Associate Chair of the Biology Department and Inclusive Access Coordinator at Houston Community College, I oversee complex initiatives that require budget reconciliation, vendor collaboration, data reporting, and strategic planning. In this role, I helped lead efforts that saved students more than $43.6 million in textbook and learning material costs within five years. These accomplishments required disciplined financial oversight, transparent reporting, and careful alignment of expenditures with institutional priorities—principles directly aligned with the Treasurer’s responsibilities.

My background as a Medical Director and Risk Management Officer further strengthened my expertise in compliance, accountability, and financial controls. Managing clinical operations required balancing budgets, supervising expenditures, maintaining meticulous records, and ensuring that resources were allocated ethically and efficiently. These experiences have prepared me to safeguard Society funds, oversee scholarships and grants responsibly, and support data-informed budget development.

If elected, I will prioritize transparency, timely reporting, and strategic budgeting that supports HAPS programming, research, and professional development opportunities. I am particularly committed to ensuring that scholarships and grants are administered with clarity and fairness while maintaining strong internal controls. I will also work collaboratively with the Board to align financial planning with long-term organizational goals.

HAPS deserves a Treasurer who is detail-oriented, mission-focused, and experienced in both leadership and fiscal oversight. I bring nearly three decades of experience in education, medicine, and administration, along with a proven record of execution and integrity. I respectfully ask for your vote and the opportunity to serve our Society with diligence, transparency, and strategic vision.

STATEMENT:

I joined HAPS as a new faculty, teaching A&P for the first time. From the beginning I was blown away by the knowledge, kindness, generosity, helpfulness, and enthusiasm of all the HAPS members I met. I believe that I am a better teacher and colleague in large part due to the HAPS community.

As the current Eastern Regional Director, I am fortunate to learn and contribute to behind-the-scenes work that makes HAPS the supportive, strong community that I am lucky to be part of. During my tenure, I have been able to participate in multiple meetings and discussions of how we can develop programming and resources that reflect the needs of our members. I, along with the Board members, have been able to advocate for increased representation of the HAPS governing body, as well as support webinars and events that highlight the values of HAPS; inclusivity and accessibility for all.

As a member of the Welcoming and Belonging Committee, one of our big tasks has been to understand the needs of our members. This aligns well with my own interests to assess the needs and wants of our region making sure that the needs of all the members in our community are heard, recognized, respected and welcome. This remains a priority for me, and it is work that I would like to continue. Evaluation of our members’ priorities will allow us to continue meeting their needs as funding, political and social landscapes change throughout the country and the world. Figuring out ways how we can support faculty at various types of institutions, and across different points in their careers is another priority for me, in my region and across all of HAPS. To help develop the connections that would foster these support systems, we have hosted a “meet your Regional Director” townhall, where members could join to learn of other HAPSters in their region.

I would love the opportunity to continue to represent my colleagues in the Eastern Region, continuing to build collaborations that promote scholarship, teaching excellence, and creativity. Thank you for considering my nomination.

STATEMENT:

Dear HAPS members, it is with gratitude and humility that I would like to express my interest in serving as the Eastern Regional Director for the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). Since my inaugural “First Timers Breakfast” in 2017, I’ve been consistently impressed and encouraged by so many individuals who have carved time into their already busy lives to serve this organization and help keep it the wonderful, timely, and welcoming society that it is. It is their fine examples that have encouraged me to step forward today.

In terms of my experience, I bring 20 years of teaching human anatomy and physiology at both private and public colleges, universities, and community colleges. My attendance at annual and regional conferences have deepened my appreciation for building and working to expand our shared sense of community, both nationally, and regionally within HAPS.

I was offered the privilege of joining in the NSF-funded RECAPER program first, as a student participant, from 2022-2024, and currently as a mentor since 2024. My participation in this wonderful program, has strengthened my resolve to seek out and use evidence-based teaching methods and to fostering collaboration among educators—particularly those at community colleges. Through RECAPER, I have deepened my experience in, facilitating professional dialogue, mentoring colleagues, and advancing pedagogical research, all of which align closely with the responsibilities of the Eastern Regional Director.

If elected, I plan to serve as a responsive liaison between the Eastern Region membership and the HAPS Board. I am committed to promoting inclusive professional development opportunities, strengthening communication across institutions, increasing membership and participation in HAPS, and supporting regional meetings that encourage meaningful collaboration. I also hope to amplify the voices of members across diverse institutional contexts, ensuring that the richness of our region’s perspectives inform the broader direction of HAPS.

I would be grateful for the opportunity to serve and promote HAPS and to continue contributing to the vibrant, supportive community that makes HAPS such a valuable professional home for so many of us.

Statement:

I am honored and excited to announce my candidacy for the position of Eastern Regional Director for the second time. I’ve been an enthusiastic member of HAPS since 2021 and attended my first annual conference in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. What an amazing first conference; my passion for HAPS began in sunny and warm Ft Lauderdale, but it was our community of “HAPSters” that left a lasting sunshine and warmth for me. I can’t help coming back every year for more.

Since joining HAPS, I’ve been actively involved in various ways, by presenting my work in workshops and poster sessions at our annual conferences and by being involved in committee and other administrative work for our organization. Most recently I joined the HAPS A.I. Task Force formation committee charged by our Board of Directors to organize a larger task force to generate a position statement to address the usage of A.I. within our organization and in the teaching of A&P overall. Since joining HAPS I have also been involved in the HAPS DEI committee, where I spearheaded two major actionable initiatives that later came to fruition under the hard and dedicated work of others within the DEI committee.

I’m proud that our organization values inclusion so highly and that our members will work together toward it. It is one of the primary reasons I keep coming back to our annual conferences; it’s that feeling of belonging that we all feel when we’re together.

I truly enjoy connecting with everyone at our annual conference, but it would be great to see more of our regional members during the intervening time. As Eastern Regional Director, I am committed to leveraging my experiences to enhance our connection, not only as HAPS members but as Eastern Regional “HAPSters” as well.

Thank you for considering me for this role, and I look forward to contributing to the continued success of our amazing organization.

HAPS SERVICE:

Years ago, I was involved with the creation of the HAPS standardized A&P exam, and routinely administered it to my students.

I have presented multiple posters and platform talks at HAPS regional and national meetings, most recently on the OER initiatives I spearheaded in my previous position at Weber State University.

STATEMENT:

Our entire world is in a state of flux, and we are right to be concerned — even terrified. Students are neither a priority for politicians, nor for the university administrators who are implementing this draconian and fascistic national policy.

Robin DeRosa (https://tinyurl.com/3u4hvu33) correctly identified the issues several years ago. Subsequently, despite her prominent national profile, she was “voluntarily” retired, as was I.

She has accurately pointed out that universities are perhaps real estate investment trusts or arms of the state legislature to create servile workers, but no longer serve as institutions of higher education. I note with interest that NOT ONE university administrator has stood up to, far less mentioned, the current crisis in higher education. Rather, we’re just quietly taking our “voluntary” separations. This affects young HAPS faculty too. On current trends, there will be no tenure protections for ANY faculty in the near future. Is there any plan to replace these tenure protections, once lost?

We need to forge new alliances. Doing the same thing over and over again, just with higher volume, is not going to produce meaningful change. Now Robin DeRosa is Executive Director of the OER Network at the University of Minnesota. In my view, an alliance with this organization would represent an exciting new direction for HAPS.

As your HAPS Western Regional Director, I will do everything I can to leverage my 45 years’ experience in teaching medical school and allied health students, as well as effective and sustained outreach to schools and communities. I continue that by adjuncting at Colorado School of Mines and substituting in the middle school classroom. I am interested in how students learn anatomy & physiology and want to further HAPS’ work in the scholarship of teaching and learning. I have been the lead on the creation of high-quality OER content (Medical English, Modular Anatomy & Physiology, On Becoming a Neuroscientist). The Weber State versions of these books have already saved students $5 million in textbook costs since their 2020 launch. I will prioritize the creation, adoption, and/or adaptation of OER by HAPS members to seize back control of the educational process.

They already took everything they could away from me, and as a result, my OER efforts are now larger than ever. I know how to thrive in the current stringent environment. I want to show other HAPS members the path.

As Leonard Cohen so eloquently put it, “They’ve summoned up a thundercloud / They’re gonna hear from me”. If you elect me your HAPS Western Regional Director, I promise you. They’re gonna hear from us.

STATEMENT:

I am honored to seek continued service in HAPS leadership after two years as Western Regional Director. During this time, I have served on the Board of Directors, acted as liaison to the DEI Committee, and worked intentionally to strengthen connection and belonging across our region.

As a member of the Welcoming and Belonging initiative, I have reached out personally to first- and second-time attendees to help them find their place within HAPS. Creating a warm, inclusive environment—where new and long-standing members alike feel seen, valued, and empowered to contribute—has been central to my leadership. As DEI liaison, I have supported initiatives such as Cafecito conversations and SACNAS outreach, helping to expand who sees themselves in A&P and in HAPS. Most recently, I am spearheading the HAPS AI Task Force—an effort I believe is essential to our future. As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes higher education, we have both an opportunity and a responsibility to consider its impact on teaching, assessment, academic integrity, and equity. I am committed to helping HAPS lead this conversation with clarity, curiosity, and care.

I am a Professor and Associate Chair at a Hispanic-Serving Institution, where many of my students are the first in their families to attend college. With nearly 20 years of experience teaching physiology, I am deeply committed to inclusive, evidence-based pedagogy and to supporting faculty in implementing active learning, accessible course design, and high-quality online instruction.

HAPS has been an extraordinary professional home for me. If reelected, I will continue building meaningful opportunities for connection—through regional programming, mentorship, and innovative initiatives—while ensuring that our region remains welcoming, forward-thinking, and responsive to the evolving needs of our members.

I would be grateful for your vote and the opportunity to continue serving our Western Region.
