HAPS Comprehensive Exam

Please download forms from the file library at the bottom of this page

The HAPS Comprehensive Examination (HAPS CE) was established in June 1993 as a standardized assessment instrument for a two semester undergraduate course in Anatomy and Physiology.  It has been continually maintained since that time and in 2014 saw a substantial upgrade to an all-online secure and validated exam.

The intended purpose of the exam is to provide a means whereby a school can compare their students’ collective performance with the normalized data accumulated from the results of all students that have taken the same exam.   You must be an instructor of a two or four year college or university or a high school educator (teaching a dual-credit course) to order the exam. There are no study guides available for students - the exam is comprehensive according to the distribution of questions provided below.

The new online exam provides enhanced reporting capabilities.  Scores can be presented as a total score, or it can be broken down by topic area (such as cardiovascular anatomy, muscle physiology, etc.).  Chi Tester is used to implement the secure administration of the exam, and will work with schools to find appropriate facilities and reports.

The exam is structured as follows:
  • 100 multiple choice questions with 5 answer options each
  • no negatively styled questions
  • Bloom's taxonomy distribution: 50% knowledge, 30% comprehension, 20% higher domains
  • Content follows HAPS learning outcomes, with questions distributed as:

Prior to 2014 there was an option to administer the HAPS Comprehensive Exam as a written exam.  The questions used in the legacy written exam are no longer the same as the questions in the online exam, and are no longer updated by the HAPS Testing Committee.  However, the legacy written exam is still available to those unable to take advantage of the benefits of the online exam.  The legacy written exam will not include any aggregate data nor content area specific enhanced reporting.  See the Legacy Written Exam page for details.

For a thorough explanation of the online testing program, please read the Chi Tester Capability document in the file library below.  Members administering the exam will receive an email from Dr. Craig Gundy, (the online testing director), providing them with instructions on how to proctor the exam and the necessary access information and passwords.

At the end of the exam period, Dr. Gundy will provide a report containing the individual student scores as a percentage, start time, end time, and duration of the exam for each student. Your report will also include the following class statistics: Average Score; High Score; Low Score; Median Score; Standard Deviation; and Range.  The HAPS Comprehensive Exam costs $9.95 per seat with discounts for larger orders.

All inquiries and comments should be directed to the HAPS Main Office by email or by phone 1-800-448-4277 (USA).

The cost structure below assumes that all exams purchased at one time will be used during the same semester.  Purchased exams do not roll over from one semester to the next, but we will refund unused tests if that becomes an issue.  If your institution has specific purchasing needs, please contact the HAPS Office at  and we will do all we can to help you out.
